Special events include a public lecture by Tim Gay on the Physics of Football on Wednesday, May 17. This lecture is based on Professor Gay's halftime presentations during the University of Nebraska Football games and his book Football Physics. The Friday evening banquet speaker will be Dr. Patricia Dehmer, the Associate Director of Science for the Basic Energy Sciences Division of the US Department of Energy.

On May 18 (Thursday) at 18:00 DAMOP 2006 will host a special NOBEL SYMPOSIUM organized by Charles Clark of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The symposium will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center-Ballroom EFG. and will honor Nobel Laureates in Atomic Physics who have received the prize since 1997. The featured speakers are

Bill Phillips (Nobel 1997 "for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light")

Eric Cornell (Nobel 2001 "for the achievement (in 1995) of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates" ), and

Roy Glauber (Nobel 2005 "for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence").

ing and the University of Tennessee will be held at 19:30 after the symposium.

Accompanying persons program

While there is no formal accompanying persons program, there will be a desk/gathering area set aside for accompanying persons to meet on Wednesday morning to get acquainted and enjoy a cup of coffee. Coffee will be available at the accompanying persons gathering area between 9:30-10:30 AM Wednesday followed by a walking tour at 10:45 guided by personnel from the East Tennessee Historical Society. After the tour, participants can go to Market Square for lunch and/or a look around.

There is no fee for this service, however, we request that accompanying persons sign up for the tour at the accompanying persons desk, which will be open from 12:00-6:00 PM on Tuesday and from 9:30-10:30AM on Wednesday.

There are many tourist activities available in the Knoxville area, but most require a car. The gathering on Wednesday provides an opportunity for participants to plan car pools and exchange contact information. Ellen Macek and Milinda Compton are assisting with these activities and will be available on Tuesday and Wednesday.
